What AEO actually means
Traditional SEO optimises for ranking: get your page into position one through ten so a human clicks through and reads it. AEO optimises for something different — being the answer, or the source behind the answer, that an AI engine generates directly on the results page or inside a chat window. The searcher may never click through to your site at all. Your win condition shifts from “ranked highly” to “cited accurately.”
This matters because the mechanics are different. A ranking algorithm compares your page against competing pages and orders them. An answer engine reads your page (or a summary of it), decides whether it’s trustworthy and specific enough to quote, and then either paraphrases it, quotes it directly, or ignores it in favour of a source it trusts more. If your content is vague, undated, or missing the structural signals that make it easy to parse and attribute, an AI engine has no reason to choose it over a competitor that made those signals easy to find.

GEO and how it relates to AEO
Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is a closely related term, and in practice the two overlap enough that most people use them interchangeably. Where AEO tends to describe the goal — get your content used as the source of an answer — GEO tends to describe the mechanism: optimising content so a generative model can extract, understand and reproduce it accurately. Some writers draw a line between AEO as query-and-answer optimisation (think featured snippets and voice search, which predate the current wave of AI chat products) and GEO as optimisation specifically for large language model-based engines like ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Copilot and Perplexity.
In practical terms, the checklist is the same either way: structured data, clear authorship, current dates, content that answers a specific question directly, and a page that’s easy for an automated reader to parse. Whether you call the discipline AEO or GEO, the underlying work doesn’t change.
How AI engines actually choose sources
None of this is guesswork or magic — the signals AI engines rely on are the same ones that have underpinned good technical SEO for years, just weighted differently.
Structured data. JSON-LD markup gives an AI engine a machine-readable description of what a page is, who wrote it, and when it was published, instead of forcing it to infer that from unstructured HTML. Organization and LocalBusiness schema establish who you are. Article schema establishes what a piece of content is and when it went live. A page with no structured data isn’t invisible to AI engines, but it is harder for them to trust — they’re extracting meaning from prose rather than reading a clean data layer.
Author and date signals. Answer engines increasingly favour content they can attribute to a specific author or organisation, published or updated on a specific date. An undated page reads as potentially stale; a page with no visible author reads as unaccountable. Both make an AI engine more cautious about citing it, because a bad citation reflects on the engine, not just on you.
Content depth. A three-paragraph page that gestures at a topic without answering the question in full rarely contains enough material for an AI engine to construct a complete, accurate answer. Depth doesn’t mean padding — it means actually covering the mechanics, the edge cases and the “why,” not just the headline claim.
Readability. Long, tangled sentences increase the risk that an automated summariser misreads or misquotes you. Short, direct sentences with one idea each are easier for a model to parse correctly and easier for a human to read too — the two goals aren’t in tension.
Citations and external references. Content that references authoritative external sources signals that the author did the research rather than restating a general impression. AI engines treat well-cited content as more reliable than content that only references itself.
Freshness. A visible, accurate last-updated date lets an AI engine judge whether your information is still current. Content without one has to be treated as suspect by default, especially on anything time-sensitive.
AEO vs traditional SEO
AEO doesn’t discard what SEO already does well — it builds on it. Fast, crawlable, indexable pages still matter, because an AI engine can’t cite what it can’t fetch. Clear headings and logical page structure still matter, because they’re one of the main ways both search crawlers and language models figure out what a section of a page is actually about. Backlinks and topical authority still matter, because they’re still one of the strongest signals of trustworthiness available to any automated system, AI or otherwise.
What’s different is the emphasis. Traditional SEO optimises heavily for keyword matching and ranking position. AEO cares less about the exact phrase you rank for and more about whether the content itself is quotable, attributable and structurally legible to a model reading it out of context — because that’s exactly the situation an AI engine is in when it pulls a paragraph from your page into a generated answer.

Practical fixes, in priority order
If your scan comes back with gaps, this is roughly the order that pays off fastest:
- Add Organization/LocalBusiness JSON-LD to your homepage so every AI engine that visits knows exactly who you are.
- Add Article schema with author and datePublished to every blog post and resource page — this is usually the single biggest gap on content-heavy sites.
- Put a visible, accurate “last updated” date on anything time-sensitive.
- Tighten your sentences. Long compound sentences are the easiest readability win — split them.
- Add FAQPage schema to pages that already answer common questions in a Q&A format; it’s low effort and directly targets how answer engines extract discrete facts.
- Add BreadcrumbList schema so AI engines understand where a page sits in your site’s structure, particularly useful if you cover more than one topic.
